Change Hostname

D2W_OS implements a convenient hostname change via the Dashboard program. Changing the hostname on the network can be useful for the following reasons:

  1. Security: Changing your hostname can help keep your network secure. For example, a hacker can use the hostname to scan the network and look for vulnerabilities. Changing the hostname can make this process more difficult, as it will be harder for a hacker to determine which machine is on which IP address.

  2. Operating System Hiding: Often a hostname can reveal a machine's operating system.

  3. Data in the logs: changing the hostname can help you analyze the data in the logs. Hostnames can be used in log entries to identify machines that have problems. If you have multiple machines with the same hostname, then this can cause confusion in the logs. Changing the machine name can help collect more accurate data in the logs.

In general, changing your network hostname can help keep your network secure, hide information about your operating system, improve log analysis, and make network maintenance easier.
